Abstract

Since the early twentieth century, numerous artists have painted onto photographs to explore the aesthetic possibilities of combining these mediums in art-making. Nevertheless, there has been little formal research into this particular method of picture-making, with a lack of theoretical texts on the subject in the literature. This essay begins to address this gap by discussing one aspect of
painted-on-photographic practice: namely, how painting onto a photograph precipitates (re)authorship of the artwork.
