| Abstract | Sound Fountain was commissioned by Musica as a temporary work exhibited as part of ‘Klankenbos’, which is a permanent collection of sound installations in open air, accommodated at the Provinciaal Domein Dommelhof at Neerpelt (Belgium) and unique in Europe. The work was installed for the summer season in a prestigious position in front of the Town Hall in the centre of a busy shopping area. The Sound Fountain can be described as a stainless steel pool and unit, which houses a canopy and speaker. Sound waves move through the water allowing the spectator to experience the sight of sound. The artist has a collection of environmental sound recordings from around the world that have been processed and combined within synthesised tracks. These tracks are amplified through the surface of the water to create waveforms and fountains. The main function of the sound fountain is to show energy visually - deepening the understanding of what sound really is – a series of movements in time - a transmission of energy by a series of vibrations. The work has significance and value as a true representation of sonic art – bringing sound and sculpture together in a physical form. The sculpture is a result of many years of developing research and original thinking. The artist experimented with speakers, wave generators and pitch shifters, designing special units to house separate speaker canopy’s underneath steel tanks containing water. |
