Metamorphosis: reflections on marble and photo-sculpture

| Abstract | This paper draws from examples of my own work (as an artist and researcher) and the artwork of Robert Mapplethorpe, Sara VanDerBeek, and Anne Büscher, to study representations of marble in contemporary photo-sculptural practice. Informed by the writing of Geraldine A. Johnson, Claire Zimmerman, and Rachel Cusk, this paper addresses some of the aesthetic, temporal and material qualities of marble, and its complicated relationship to architectural, bodily, photographic, and sculptural form. While this paper focuses on examples of photo-sculptural practice, it is part of a broader enquiry into representations of marble, including its use in architectural projects. |
