Abstract

This chapter introduces the concept of emotional resilience and how it can help to prepare students to succeed on placements. Being resilient can help students to feel confident, have a rewarding placement experience and develop strategies to continue to develop their resilience. To encourage an understanding of emotional resilience, the chapter begins by exploring the origins of the term ‘emotional resilience’ and considers research relating to emotional resilience in children and adults. Definitions of emotional resilience are also examined which include a wide range of aspects relating to the individual such as personal traits, attributes, skills and experience, as well as social, cultural and environmental factors.
