Abstract | The Bølling-Allerød Interstadial saw a marked climatic amelioration in the mountains of the Balkans and a transition to warm and moist conditions. Glaciers retreated to the highest areas, and this is shown by the presence of lakes containing Bølling-Allerød sediments in some of the highest parts of the Balkans. Geomorphological evidence for glaciers during the Bølling-Allerød is lacking because Younger Dryas glaciers were larger and the morphostratigraphical evidence precludes any evidence of Bølling-Allerød glaciers. Since small niche glaciers survive today in parts of the Balkans, similar glaciers are likely to have existed during the Bølling-Allerød close to the highest cirque backwalls. |
