Abstract | The Younger Dryas Stadial is relatively muted in palaeoclimate records from the Balkans, especially in pollen records from lakes and bogs in the western Balkans where moisture supply did not fall markedly through this interval. There is, however, evidence of cooling and glacier expansion dated to the Younger Dryas in the southern and western Balkans. Strong west-east precipitation gradients are indicated by an increase in steppe taxa in pollen records. This is also reflected in marked rises in glacier equilibrium line altitudes (ELAs) from west to east. |
