Abstract | Drawing from visual and textual semiotics, this presentation negotiates themes arriving from the performance and exhibition of Jingo Jango that critically considers the colonial British legacy in the Americas. Jingo Jango – colloquially translating to ‘ridiculous patriotic war mongerer’ – seeks to critique the gestural, performative behaviors of both the ignorant tourist and the audacious colonizer as a homogenized caricature. This work provides an experimental, yet problematic tackling of this burden with an attempted unshackling of a regrettable yet acknowledged ancestral history. |
