Description

Fisher was invited to make and exhibit a new work, 'Facade (Balcony)', a painted textile wall hanging in 'An Elastic Continuum', an international group exhibition & symposium presented by The ‘New Materialist Reading Group’ (NMRG) which featured the work of 17 contemporary artists, curated by NMRG co-leads Dr Rebecca Howard & Dr Victoria Sharples at S1 ARTSPACE, Sheffield from 16 - 22 June 2023.

Arriving from the proposition of ‘skin’, An Elastic Continuum offers an interface with skinnings: surfaces, architectural structures, organisms, membranes and embalmings.

The works on show present a plethora of intersectional readings that transect ontologies of animacy and the sensorial, biotechnical interventions (birth, growth, ailment, and death), human, animal and plant bodies, and spaces of trans-ition, whether -gender, -species or interior-exterior relations).

For the exhibition, Fisher’s work 'Facade (Balcony)'continues his interest in the architectural, employing a formal abstract visual language to explore ideas of pictorial disruption, interruption and spatial collapse through an investigation of abandoned spaces and the architectural ruin. The work is stage-like, acting as architectural facade (skin) which is made in response to specific spaces and/or locations, in this instance the work was made in response to the location of the gallery within Park Hill Estate, Sheffield.
