Abstract

From Online to Offline: translating screen-based interactions into studio practices.

This paper explicates four initiatives undertaken by the University of Derby Fine Art team during lock-down, which aimed to sustain and motivate student engagement through active online participation. CHIT CHAT - a weekly screen-based informal social gathering of students and staff and HIT LIST/TOP 5 - the networked dissemination of staff’s favourite films, music, and artworks will be reviewed. Challenges associated with student-managed social media posting as a means of sharing practices through the INSTAGRAM TAKEOVER will be explained. Finally, the pedagogic implications of learning and teaching through students’ social media interaction in the virtual ONE-MINUTE SCULPTURE session will be analysed. The “not knowing” dimension of how this activity would develop in real-time through student-interconnected Instagram use, and how students would respond to, and extend on, each other’s work through this event will be explored. How these initiatives have now been reshaped into active engagements in the studio through specific learning experiences and socially inclusive get-togethers will be discussed as a contribution to the, 'There Is Something We Can Do: From not-knowing to new theatres of encounter and agency within the art school', session convened by Martin Newth

“On Not Knowing: How Artists Teach” took place from 9 - 10 June 2023. The event was hosted jointly by The Glasgow School of Art and UniArts Helsinki and was held in person at The Glasgow School of Art, United Kingdom.
