Abstract | Parenting a hospitalised newborn baby can be challenging for any parent and not least of all because of the multitude of factors that may make the experience a difficult one. In this chapter, we begin with a brief and broad overview of the common types of challenges parents face and illustrate them through the inclusion of a real-world case study. As we move through the sections, we touch on some of the significant and most widely researched psychological domains of functioning. Furthermore, evidence and overviews are provided about the transition to parenthood, cognitive beliefs (such as parental self-efficacy), coping strategies, mental health experiences (including depression and anxiety), and parent-child relationships. |
